Holographic data storage crystals for the LDEF
Crystals of lithium niobate were passively exposed to the space environment of the Long Duration Exposure Facility (LDEF). Three of the four crystals contained volume holograms. Although the crystals suffered the surface damage characteristic of that suffered by other components on the Georgia Tech tray, the crystals remained suitable for the formation of volume holograms

Review of rigorous coupled-wave analysis and of homogeneous effective medium approximations for high spatial-frequency surface-relief gratings
A review of the rigorous coupled-wave analysis as applied to the diffraction of electro-magnetic waves by gratings is presented. The analysis is valid for any polarization, angle of incidence, and conical diffraction. Cascaded and/or multiplexed gratings as well as material anisotropy can be incorporated under the same formalism. Small period rectangular groove gratings can also be modeled using approximately equivalent uniaxial homogeneous layers (effective media). The ordinary and extraordinary refractive indices of these layers depend on the gratings filling factor, the refractive indices of the substrate and superstrate, and the ratio of the freespace wavelength to grating period. Comparisons of the homogeneous effective medium approximations with the rigorous coupled-wave analysis are presented. Antireflection designs (single-layer or multilayer) using the effective medium models are presented and compared. These ultra-short period antireflection gratings can also be used to produce soft x-rays. Comparisons of the rigorous coupled-wave analysis with experimental results on soft x-ray generation by gratings are also included
Attenuation in waveguides on FR-4 boards due to periodic substrate undulations

The rigorous transmission-line network approach is used and the FR-4 substrate is treated as a long-period substrate grating. A quantitative metric for an appropriate matrix truncation is presented. The peaks of attenuation are shown to occur near the Bragg conditions that characterize the leaky-wave stop bands. For a typical 400 µm period FR-4 substrate with an 8 µm corrugation depth, a buffer layer thickness of about 40 µm is found to be needed to make the attenuation negligibly small
Refractive-index profiling of azimuthally asymmetric optical fibers by microinterferometric optical phase tomography

Most profile measurement techniques cannot correctly characterize fibers with small or irregular refractive-index variations over their cross sections. Microinterferometric optical phase tomography (MIOPT) is a technique that allows measurement of fiber refractive-index profiles exhibiting such variations. We present the first demonstration, to our knowledge, of MIOPT. The profile of a polarization-maintaining fiber is measured by MIOPT and shown to be in agreement with (destructive) fiber end-face measurements. MIOPT is also applied to the limiting case of a symmetric single-mode fiber

increases, interconnection speed at the backplane and board levels
are beginning to limit system performance, which drives investigations
into alternative interconnection technologies. Critical
factors to consider when evaluating alternative interconnection
approaches include interconnect speed, power consumption,
area, and compatibility with current backplane and board
integration technologies. Optical interconnections can achieve
very high speed with a significant reduction in interconnect
footprint compared to transmission lines, robust signal quality
in high-density interconnection systems because of immunity to
electromagnetic interference, and potentially simple to design
(compared to transmission lines) lines with materials which
can be postprocessed onto printed wiring boards or integrated
into the board structure. This paper explores design options for
planar optical interconnections integrated onto boards, discusses
fabrication options for both beam turning and embedded interconnections
to optoelectronic devices, describes integration
processes for creating embedded planar optical interconnections,
and discusses measurement results for a number of integration
schemes that have been demonstrated by the authors. In the area
of optical interconnections with beams coupled to and from the
board, the topics covered include integrated metal-coated polymer
mirrors and volume holographic gratings for optical beam turning
perpendicular to the board. Optical interconnections that utilize
active thin film (approximately 1-5 µm thick) optoelectronic
components embedded in the board are also discussed, using both
Si and high temperature FR-4 substrates. Both direct and evanescent
coupling of optical signals into and out of the waveguide are
discussed using embedded optical lasers and photodetectors
Reconstructing the reproductive mode of an Ediacaran macro-organism.
Enigmatic macrofossils of late Ediacaran age (580-541 million years ago) provide the oldest known record of diverse complex organisms on Earth, lying between the microbially dominated ecosystems of the Proterozoic and the Cambrian emergence of the modern biosphere. Among the oldest and most enigmatic of these macrofossils are the Rangeomorpha, a group characterized by modular, self-similar branching and a sessile benthic habit. Localized occurrences of large in situ fossilized rangeomorph populations allow fundamental aspects of their biology to be resolved using spatial point process techniques. Here we use such techniques to identify recurrent clustering patterns in the rangeomorph Fractofusus, revealing a complex life history of multigenerational, stolon-like asexual reproduction, interspersed with dispersal by waterborne propagules. Ecologically, such a habit would have allowed both for the rapid colonization of a localized area and for transport to new, previously uncolonized areas. Low omega-6 vs. low omega-6 plus high omega-3 dietary intervention for Chronic Daily Headache: Protocol for a randomized clinical trial
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Targeted analgesic dietary interventions are a promising strategy for alleviating pain and improving quality of life in patients with persistent pain syndromes, such as chronic daily headache (CDH). High intakes of the omega-6 (n-6) polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), linoleic acid (LA) and arachidonic acid (AA) may promote physical pain by increasing the abundance, and subsequent metabolism, of LA and AA in immune and nervous system tissues. Here we describe methodology for an ongoing randomized clinical trial comparing the metabolic and clinical effects of a low n-6, average n-3 PUFA diet, to the effects of a low n-6 plus high n-3 PUFA diet, in patients with CDH. Our primary aim is to determine if: A) both diets reduce n-6 PUFAs in plasma and erythrocyte lipid pools, compared to baseline; and B) the low n-6 plus high n-3 diet produces a greater decline in n-6 PUFAs, compared to the low n-6 diet alone. Secondary clinical outcomes include headache-specific quality-of-life, and headache frequency and intensity.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Adults meeting the International Classification of Headache Disorders criteria for CDH are included. After a 6-week baseline phase, participants are randomized to a low n-6 diet, or a low n-6 plus high n-3 diet, for 12 weeks. Foods meeting nutrient intake targets are provided for 2 meals and 2 snacks per day. A research dietitian provides intensive dietary counseling at 2-week intervals. Web-based intervention materials complement dietitian advice. Blood and clinical outcome data are collected every 4 weeks.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Subject recruitment and retention has been excellent; 35 of 40 randomized participants completed the 12-week intervention. Preliminary blinded analysis of composite data from the first 20 participants found significant reductions in erythrocyte n-6 LA, AA and %n-6 in HUFA, and increases in n-3 EPA, DHA and the omega-3 index, indicating adherence.</p> <p>Trial Registration</p> <p>ClinicalTrials.gov <a href="http://www.clinicaltrials.gov/ct2/show/(NCT01157208)">(NCT01157208)</a></p
